Some of those who visit Domina Zara's School have recently got interested in this novel because of his author's interview for newspaper 'La Vanguardia', in which he said to have been inspired for the novel by the real story of a well-known person in the Barcelona SM community. It was a new chance to check whether our 'kink' could be dealt with in a deep and intelligent way. Actually, there is not much of either. SM only appears incidentally and as yet another commonplace to describe the sleazy and hopeless environment the characters inhabit. The story's heroine makes a living of 'beating perverts' because it's much easier than sucking cock or being shagged. Besides, she hates men (for, predictably enough, she was abused as a child), so it all makes sense. The characters don't have any psychological identity. They are all stereotypes of eternal deep dark Spain: the rich widower, the cleaning girl with ambitions, the good-hearted lowlife criminal, his mother (the drug-addicted prostitute), the cheating gormless husband... As you may guess, it is the literary equivalent of an Almodovar film, with more or less original situations in an allegedly realistic atmosphere. On the other hand, it makes easy reading. The style is lively, with short, concise dialogues and quickly-paced action. However, it is still a pity that writers who flaunt their leftism and write articles criticizing the simplicity and stupidity of our society's customs and habits fall into society's very same clichey attitudes towards SM when they could have gone further. Just another missed opportunity. A film, directed by the writer Ramon de España himself, is being made out of the novel. Shooting, for which some of Domina Zara's props have been used, is due to finish soon. At the moment, we don't have any idea whether the film will be released in English-speaking countries, as we don't know whether an English translation of the novel exists...
